Crypto Gateways: The Native Environment for AI Agents

Stablecoin transaction volume hit $46 trillion annually — up 106% year over year. September 2025 alone saw $1.25 trillion processed in a single month. And those numbers could scale dramatically, given that crypto payment gateways are actively planning to integrate AI agents into their infrastructure.

The crypto market is almost uniquely suited for this kind of innovation. AI agents are software — they can't pass the identity verification that banks require. A crypto wallet only needs a private key. That means an AI agent can send and receive cryptocurrency without going through KYC every single time.

The early results of that compatibility are already showing up in the data. The share of stablecoin settlements has climbed to 36% of all transactions, up from just 5% at the end of 2023. Gartner projects that by 2030, AI "machine clients" could control or influence up to $30 trillion in annual purchases. MarketsandMarkets forecasts the AI agent market growing from $7.84 billion in 2025 to $52.62 billion by 2030.

Coinbase has emerged as the informal leader in AI agent integration — the company even developed its own protocol for it, called x402. On the Ethereum side, developers introduced ERC-8004, an NFT-based digital identity standard for agents that Binance Pay has already adopted.

NOWPayments, CoinGate, and BitPay haven't made any public statements on the topic, but Cryptomus has added AI agent integration to its official roadmap. PayPal and OpenAI announced an instant checkout tool through the Agent Checkout Protocol, built directly into ChatGPT. And in January 2025, Google unveiled AP2 — Agent Payment Protocol 2.0.

That said, it's worth being clear about where things actually stand: fully operational models where the paying party is an AI agent rather than a human don't really exist yet. Trust remains the biggest barrier to making agentic payments a mainstream reality.
