$2.7B of the Binance hack was saved by Tether and Circle freezes. What does that say about decentralization?

Unpopular opinion: the Binance hack isn’t the real story.

Everyone’s talking about the $6.36B. I’m looking at what saved the other $2.7B.

It wasn’t decentralization or code. It was Tether, Circle, and Ripple hitting a freeze button. Arbitrum’s Security Council even moved funds out of a wallet using emergency powers.

Think about that.

The biggest crypto heist in history was partly stopped by the exact centralized controls this industry spent 15 years saying it didn’t need.

I’m not saying that’s bad. Honestly, I’m glad they could do it. But let’s stop pretending.

Crypto in 2026 isn’t “trustless.” It’s trust, moved to a different set of companies.

Three more things bother me:

1️⃣ One laptop. A single engineer’s device was the first domino. A $144B platform with that kind of single point of failure is a culture problem, not a tech problem.

2️⃣ The story keeps changing. First it was one laptop, then “multiple breach points.” Then “customer funds weren’t touched,” yet the drained wallets were listed as backing customer balances. I’ll give Binance credit when the post-mortem matches the promises.

3️⃣ Covering $6.3B is impressive, and also scary. Only a handful of companies on earth could absorb that loss. That’s not a sign of a healthy, decentralized market. That’s a sign of how much power one exchange holds.

Credit where it’s due: fast freeze, a full-cover promise, and public updates. Better than FTX by miles.

But “user funds are safe” shouldn’t depend on one company having deep enough pockets.

Self-custody isn’t a meme. It’s the whole point.
